Social Media marketing, much like kindergarten, allows you to stretch your creative limits. It’s okay to try new, exciting, and different things! You never know where you are going to end up. You have a blank canvas, and can choose to push yourself to try something out of the ordinary.
The ordinary does not “stick” in people’s minds, to borrow a term from Malcom Gladwell’s work. If your idea/concept/campaign isn’t “sticky,” it’s not going to go too far. The thing about stickiness though, is that it’s really tough to predict. An idea either sticks or it doesn’t. Back in the olden days, if you tried an ad campaign, and it didn’t stick, you were out a ton of money, and were probably ticked off about it. These days, if you try something and it doesn’t stick, you can just try something else! That’s the beauty of social media.
This is not to say that failure is okay, it’s not. The point is, the likelihood that you are going to strike the exact note that makes your marketing stick increases as you try new and different things.
Bland/faceless/blank/normal/plain just doesn’t cut it in Social Media. Interesting/creative/different/noteworthy/inspiring is what does. What an opportunity!
Spend some time brainstorming. Think of all the different things you could use social media for in your organization. Ask for input from your employees, from your customers, from your friends. Ask for help from an expert. Try something new and different every chance you get. If you take this approach to your social media efforts, you are bound to succeed.
